This is a renovation of a house that was rebuilt in 1996 after the earthquake which occurred in 1995. The old house was severely damaged by the earthquake and had to be rebuilt. The house that was built then was for a family of four and their grandparents. However, time passed by and family members have changed. The owner who rebuilt the house then now has become the new grandparents and their elementary school son then is now married along with a child. So, due to their new needs, the son decided to split the house in two zones, one for their own and the other for grandparents. The task for the architect was to bring more natural light into the interior since it’s darkness was one of the issues that had to be solved. Moreover, in order to maximize the effect of natural light, finish materials were carefully chosen to absorb natural light and louvers were used with a combination of a void that was newly put into the space. As a consequence, very soft natural light domains most space along with shadow making the space more deep and silent.
