The Tadasu no Mori, located within the grounds of Shimogamo Shrine, exudes a unique atmosphere that makes one feel as if a deity resides there. A historic house over 100 years old stands in a location where one can view this Tadasu no Mori every day. At the request of a French and Japanese couple who had a fateful encounter with this old house, we undertook its renovation. The family consists of the couple and their two children, making a family of four. The house, which appears to have undergone multiple extensions and renovations throughout its long history, was severely deteriorated and quite damaged. Additionally, the couple was very concerned about its structural resistance, so we prioritized repairs to the damaged sections, including seismic reinforcement, while also exploring plans for creating a new chapter in the house’s history. What the couple desired was a spacious dining area and kitchen, as they often entertain guests. This area was made the most substantial, while other spaces such as bedrooms and the living room were arranged within the structural constraints, solidifying the overall plan.
