We planned a dual-family house in south of Osaka, for a family of five—husband, wife, three children and grandmother. It was a rebuild project on the land where they had originally lived. The conditions included providing a parking space where cars could be parked side by side without getting wet in the rain, maintaining an appropriate distance from the grandmother, and keeping the total floor area as small as possible due to budget considerations. Generally, in dual-family houses, there is often a need for two sets of water-related facilities (bath, washbasin, kitchen, etc.), as well as bedrooms equal to the number of family members, which inevitably increases the floor area. As a solution to reduce floor area, the three children's rooms were designed using a vertical space created by the height difference between the road and the site, allowing three beds, three study spaces, and three storage areas to be consolidated within an 8-tatami mat space ( approx.13㎡). It was fortunate that the three siblings happened to be of the same gender. Additionally, this children’s room is located between the grandmother’s and parent’s households, also functioning as an appropriate buffer zone between the generations. To inherit the atmosphere of the single-story house built by the late grandfather, we designed a low-height skipped floor plan while creating a plan suited to the new family structure. The intention was to strengthen family bonds while respecting the grandmother's ongoing relationship with the community, and aims to maintain and deepen that relationship over time. We also considered the relationship between the road and the garden, as well as the existance of the pilotis.
